They Live (1988)

Media I Have Consumed > Movies

Scifi/horror film, directed by John Carpenter[1].

On December 14, 2020, I watched a Youtube video called "They Live - glasses scene" -- no recollection as to what linked me to it (probably some reddit comment), but I watched it. Since then, I have occasionally thought[2] about this scene and figured I would someday watch the movie, since I was interested in the premise. That day was today, August 12, 2026[3].

It was a good movie, but not a great one, I must admit.

First of all, I love a good rebellion. So there's that.

But. The movie didn't really live up to the hype that had built up in my head (yes, from that one clip) starting six years ago. The ending fell a little flat. I expected more, maybe.

I guess I want to get a bit more specific so I will guard my notes with spoiler warning.

  1. never particularly paid attention to this name but I've also seen his The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China ↩︎

  2. and occasionally got it confused with the movie "Soylent Green", which I also watched earlier this year. I guess it was the year to wrap up thinking about watching this duo, and to actually watch them. ↩︎

  3. I feel some weight in realizing that it took me 6 years to get around to it. It's like it was eating away at some part of me for these six years, just waiting to be actualized. But what can be done. There are surely countless other latent situations like this just waiting to be realized. But I suppose the real point here is that the meaning and value of things can change over time, and you can't know right away which one of these things might build up. And also as more time passed, the memory of this clip intrigued me more and more until something reminded me of it and I couldn't resist the temptation of finding out the surrounding context of that clip. It's kind of a "Marshmallow Test" situation. ↩︎

  4. All that being said, I feel like it would be pretty funny to memorize these phrases and spit them back out at random times in real life. I'm slightly cracking myself up at this idea. Will I do it? Probably not. ↩︎
