Creating Webcomics

It never crossed my mind in the past that I'd ever want to make one of these.

Do I even like comics?

I have enjoyed some Instagram webcomic creators (if isolated panel-clusters per post would be considered a webcomic creator) like Alex Norris's "webcomic_name" / "oh no" comics.
Besides for that, I have occasionally come across some other ones, but I don't really browse Instagram for exploration, so it's rare.
I also started recently (2026) following raminnazer on Instagram which also fits the webcomic vibe.

Of course, there's also manga. I think back in the day, I read some of the Fairy Tale manga, but not much and not much of anything else.

I've also never been much of a fan of paper comics in general.

Turning point? Prophet of the new sun

But recently (2024 or 2025) I discovered through Kagi Small Web (which has its own Comics filter so you can browse webcomics!) a longer-form webcomic that I really like: "Prophet of the New Sun". I got absorbed into it, though I haven't caught up on it (but I've been wanting to). And I feel like it planted a seed in my mind as an art form I could see myself trying out.

Inspired by Terra Ignotta

Then I was thinking one day about how much I loved the Terra Ignotta series and how it seems perfect for some kind of animated adaptation. After seeing that there is none existing already^[1], of course my mind went toward contemplating if I could make something. But I knew that animating is hard and time-consuming, so my mind next settled on the idea of making a webcomic for it or for a portion of it^[2]. This eventually got me thinking about learning to be better at Drawing People From Imagination, because obviously that's needed in order to create the drawings of a character-based comic.

Creating a scrappy comic

Then one night, while showering, I thought of a recent situation that happened, and it felt very comic-able, and I ended up making a scrappy comic: Unnecessary Upgrade. That was fun to make and it felt pretty satisfying to finish something in this area! I spent about an hour on it, which simultaneously feels impressive because it's pretty quick for something that was so satisfying, and also not long at all because I need so many more hours to become better at this (if I really want to become better at it).

What's next?

No current plans other than seeing Drawing People From Imagination as the next step in my progression towards a web comic. Also for the Terra Ignotta idea, probably if I want to inch just a little bit towards that, I could make some sketches of characters or even certain scenes. Could even just jump straight into sketching out the opening sequence of the first book.

Seems like the "scrappy" method (low effort but comprehendible storyboarding)is a low-friction way for me to do comic-drawing, so I could see myself having more sessions like that in the future (whether for Terra Ignotta or random things like Unnecessary Upgrade).
